Study shows that GDP per capita in these places could grow by up to 21% over a five-year period

According to a study by US consulting firm ThoughtLab, smart cities will increasingly play a leading role in global economic growth: GDP per capita in these places could grow up to 21% over a five-year period. The research was carried out in 2023 to analyze the latest opinions and strategies, evaluating 200 cities around the world, interviewing 2,000 citizens in 20 cities, as well as their municipal leaders and experts.
Cities are undergoing an unprecedented pace of change to face increasingly complex economic, social and climate challenges. On the other hand, they are dealing with the growing expectations of citizens, who need wider digital access to public services, health and education; more sustainable and secure infrastructure, mobility and living conditions; greater inclusion, public health and affordable housing.
The rapid and strategic response to these demands constitutes a smart city, whose technological initiatives, based on data, are used to manage public resources and assets with the aim of offering better services to the population. As the research points out, all government investment will pay off not only in increased quality of life for citizens, but also in economic growth well above the global average.
